Halloween Shed ~ Part 1

Well, I have made a start on the shed, getting all the 'stand up to do' bits out of the way. I did a dry run to make sure that everything went together ok and hubby found some nice thin wood strips for me to use as the shiplap cladding on the shed exterior.

Once that was sorted, I nagged for a nice base which hubby routed to give me a nice bevelled edge. Then out came the tin of super dark wood dye! It's darker in RL!

The wood dye is 'Coloron Indian Rose Wood' and I applied it to the unsealed MDF with a 'fat headed' artists brush. I didn't seal the MDF so that the wood dye would soak in really well and give me a darker, older finish.

I've started to dirty the windows too and I have a couple of old rusty buckets, one has a little mouse nest in it at the moment ;0)

I know exactly how I want the shed, but I can't decide whether to have a vine or part of a tree growing over the shed, I think I will just make a start and see where the materials take me.

But first, I will nagging hubby to make the shelves and potting table for the inside and I have to age and fix the shiplap cladding to the outside.

So there's my little start on my 'halloween shed.' It's not very halloweeny yet, but it will be when it's finished!

Not long now till my 'little hospital visit', so I don't know how much I will be around over the next couple of weeks or so, I may be incrediably bored and manage to be here every day, driving you all nuts or I may just be curled up on the sofa with the TV remote. If I'm not around, I will take pics of the shed as I go along and do a very long post of how I did it, when I'm feeling better.

See you all soon,
Julia xxx

  2. Julia I love the deep colour, its very rich but will go really well with the orange of pumpkins. I think a tree would be cool. Thats a nice big base what are you having on the outside of the shed? Will you have a new doll too or will it just be for loads of minis? Hope all goes well and you dont feel to lousy and have more to show us, as its a smashing little project to keep you going. Kate xxx

  3. Hi Kate,
I am going to put a wheelbarrow full of pumpkins and piles of broken pots outside the shed and pots of mushrooms and pumpkins on messy shelves inside. But, no new witches here, as this little project isn't staying, it will be going in my Etsy store when finished.
I'm really looking forward to getting on with it, I have loads of ideas and its a good little distraction :0)

  5. It's a great kit and I love it. I love the old and worn look as you know!

It's absolutely fine not to seal MDF if you are using anything other than a water soluble paint/stain. It warps otherwise, as I have found out the hard way! lol

I hope all goes well at the hospital and we will be thinking of you. We have more worries and concern's in my family again...we are hoping for a positive result! :o))

  10. Hi Julia, you have made a great start so perhaps you will have all the 'pretty bits' left to do when you are feeling bored or miserable after your hospital trip.

How lucky you are to have a talented husband to help too.

  14. Not having a real autumn here where I live, I can never get in autumn mood (nor Haloween for that matter), but I enjoy looking at all the Haloweeny things. Your shed will be so cool when it's finished. I can just see it with my mind's eye! Hope your hospitalisation won't take too much out of you and you will be jumping around before you know it. Will be thinking of you.

  15. Thankyou Marion, I hope I will be jumping around soon too, I'm getting a flat backside sitting on it all the time! lol. I would love to live somewhere warmer, but I would miss the autumn and the changing colours of the leaves. I hope my little shed will live up to how you see it! ;0)
